ACT I

CITY KID portrays six months in the lives of a group of kids living in America today. It is a coming of age tale. The City Kid’s turf is filled with anticipation. Buddies playing hoops, girls primping, lots of energy and dance. LENA’S entrance with the tough girls and SLICK’S entrance to an expectant entourage tell you what these kids are looking for- power, popularity and acceptance. Their world is hot, sexy, a little dangerous, but with an undercurrent of freedom and fun.In their midst MR. DOE, an old homeless man, implores the kids to face the truth, that a good life depends on making good choices- either to rise up or fall down. The kids ignore him.

JIMMY, the new kid, would give anything to be a part of the crowd. Befriended by DANNY (one of the coolest City Kids) he is dazzled by the whole scene, particularly ANNA, DANNY’S sister and the object of SLICK’S affection. DANNY warns JIMMY to slow down.

(PROLOGUE)

JIMMY, undaunted, tells DANNY he wants to be one of them.(CITY KID).

SLICK rounds up his kids, reminding them of who he is and what they must believe (I DON’T NEED NOBODY) He takes DANNY and STOMP on a tour of his hoped for new territory.( BADDBOY tells SLICK to stay in his own neighborhood or suffer the consequences
( JEFFERSON STREET DETOUR).

A party ensues, a celebration of youth and sexuality. In their midst, ANNA and JIMMY find each other((WANNA GET IT GOOD) ANNA, confused by SLICK’S attention and her attraction to JIMMY withdraws. (SOMETHING MORE) LENA, Jealous of ANNA, belittles her in front of the kids. ANNA assures LENA that she doesn’t want SLICK.(CONFRONTATION). JIMMY approaches ANNA and they acknowledge their mutual attraction) As SLICK watches, they find themselves falling in love.(SOMETHIN’ ABOUT YOU) Not realizing that he’s tread on SLICK’S female territory, and still wanting desperately to be a part of the group, JIMMY joins the other kids as they imagine a fantasy future.(BE SOMEBODY). JIMMY makes a secret plan to meet ANNA in the park later that night. SLICK, seizing the opportunity, advises JIMMY that his chance to be a City Kid has come. He sends JIMMY off to Jefferson Street to deliver some drugs, knowing that he will be done for. DANNY tries to stop JIMMY but cannot. (ON THE INSIDE)

JIMMY rushes off to Jefferson Street, filled with a sense of importance now that SLICK has recognized him. He offers BADDBOY the package. BADDBOY and his crew are about to massacre JIMMY when a cop comes on the scene. JIMMY, in a panic, drops the baggie which the cop picks up. With the police and BADDBOY on his tail, JIMMY runs for his life. (ONE WAY TICKET) He goes to the park to find ANNA who is waiting for him. JIMMY pleads with her to run away with him but she refuses, too scared. JIMMY is caught by the cops and arrested. SLICK appears and offers ANNA his comfort. She accepts.
