As a little girl growing up in the Bay Area, creating poems, cartoons, and stories were some of Melina RoChelle’s favorite pastimes, next to singing along with anything she could. Encouraged and influenced by her father, Bay Area jazz musician Tal Hicks, she performed around the Bay Area with her father and sisters for many years. Melina RoChelle later moved to Los Angeles to attend Loyola Marymount University where she majored in Communications and minored in Theatre. While at LMU, she he landed roles in Hair, Once on This Island, Finding the Sun, The Love Space Demands and The Vagina Monologues. After graduating, she launched her own theater company, Ro Theatrix and co-produced, choreographed and starred in Once On This Island at Santa Clara University and at the Complex Theater in Hollywood, receiving high praise from the LA Weekly and garnering three NAACP Theater Award nominations. Other theater credits include: Eve in Jesus Jazz, Dorothy in The Wiz, Jenny Lind in Barnum and Queen Minerva in The Princess and the Pea. Most recently Melina RoChelle was cast in the workshop of Baby It’s You based on the career of The Shirelles, the very first girl group to have a number one single on the Billboard Hot 100. In addition to her roles in musical theatre, Melina RoChelle formed the band RoGue with her two sisters in 2002. Three years later the band was selected as one of the top picks for the Dirty Dave Show on KCLA FM in the Unsigned Talent Search Series and was nominated for a Los Angeles Music Award for Best R&B Artist. Since RoGue was formed, they’ve released two full-length recordings and they are currently working their third album, a collection of standard and original Christmas songs, available December 2007. Melina RoChelle currently resides in Los Angeles where she spends much of her time working on her music and auditioning for film, television and theatre projects. |
